Double protection!

I have a good friend who looks at my logs, and he knows my specific weeknesses so he knows what to look for. CE doesn’t block content but I think it really helps you develop much more self-control by knowing that if you look at something you shouldn’t, it will get reported to your partner. Perhaps it would be better to get a blocker so that the issue of testing my self-control would be taken away.

I haven’t yet put it through all my tests, but if you want to know what it is, contact me via my contact page and I will let you know.

But I have a very hard time recommending the software. I installed in on my computer in 2006 and again in 2008 while attending a different church, but wound up uninstalling it both times due to serious performance issues.

Three years later, things haven’t changed. I installed it again on my new system last week. Since then, it has crashed my 9-month-old work computer multiple times (more than 20) in less than four days. My backup computer has crashed as well, but only once or twice.

I spent more than three hours with their tech support team two days ago. To try and get the software stable, they had me remove the firewall on my wireless router, delete my anti-virus software and turn off Windows Firewall. When that wasn’t working, a technician took control of my computer and fiddled with the Windows registry and deleted some other Windows-related software. My system was exposed to the world, but at least my accountability partner could see if I lingered too long on some website.

They finally did a restore and attempted a fresh install. The program works, but logs itself off repeatedly to the point that the computer must be rebooted to get to a point where it can log in again. And if you click through too many websites too quickly, the software gets confused, jams up and throws up a warning that nmSvc.exe has stopped working. The only remedy is to reboot.

I run an Internet news business and find that this software is a hugely problematic in allowing me to get my work done. I am writing this review while waiting for my computer to reboot the second time today — and it’s only 8:13 a.m.
